Brakes are critical to our cars and our safety. Because there isn't a warning light or gauge for wear-and-tear on our brakes it is hard to know when to bring your car in for service. There is a warning light for brake fluid. If this lights up it is critical that you bring your car in as soon as possible. Do not wait as this is a very important warning light. In the absence of this light, many of us rely on our ears to figure out when brakes should be attended to. We assume it is all good until we hear a screech. There are a few problems with that. The first is that if you are hearing a noise, you have likely worn through your brake pads and are hearing the sound of metal on your rotors. This is a more expensive fix. It's best to schedule regular brake maintenance and have your brake pads checked regularly. Replacing a brake pad, or polishing a rotor is a lot less expensive than replacing the entire rotor.
